It’s about to get a lot easier to find a kerbside EV charger in Australia
Kerb-side electric vehicle (EV) charging is getting a boost in three Australian states, with new funding put in place for the installation of 250 metropolitan and regional chargers.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has stumped up $2.4 million in funding for EVX Australia to set up chargers in over 60 local government areas across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.
These are EVX-developed, Australia-made EV chargers, designed to be installed on poles and provide a sustainable way to expand EV infrastructure "while meeting local electrical and planning regulations".
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) says that by using AC power with "smart charging capability", EVX chargers have a "low impact" on local electricity grids and gets installed on existing electricity poles, which means there's no need for any disrupting work.
.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen reckons if it's easier to charge your EV, more Aussies will take the plunge and switch to electric vehicles.
“These chargers are a vital step towards making cleaner, more affordable EVs available for Australians who can't charge 'em at home,"
“When we arrived in government, one in 50 cars was an EV. That's now one in ten. And we've increased the number of fast-chargers around Australia by three times. But we need a blend of options, not just fast-chargers, but more handy kerb-side options around our cities and towns.”
Projects like this, supported by ARENA funding, are helping us come up with the solutions we need to make a bigger impact.
Regions that'll benefit from the new chargers in NSW include Orange, Wagga Wagga, Bellingen, Forbes, Queanbeyan, Wingecarribee, Goulburn, and Eurobodalla.
Fair dinkum, the Aussie energy firm Flow Power will be the gasسی 윳single-services electricity supplier for all 250 sites, while EVX will be lookin' after the grunt work of collating real-time data and havin' a yarn with Ausgrid and Essential Energy to come up with some flexible tariff structures.
Endeavour Energy, SA Power Networks, Ausnet, Citi Power, Powercor, and United Energy will also get on board with the rollout.
It's estimated that over 1100 fast-charging stations with more than 3500 sockets are now available across Australia, while the 250 newer kerbside charging points will also provide 500 charging sockets.
