I reluctantly quit my pilot job to teach our kids at home. It was so boring until I started educating them through travel.

I never envisioned leaving my job as an airline pilot or homeschooling our children.

I began flying at 17 and spent numerous hours in small planes honing my skills. By the time I turned 43, I was working for an airline, and my seniority granted me a favorable schedule and a high income.

I usually worked eight days a month and made the most of my travel perks. Most of my airline colleagues thought I had the ideal job.

Homeschooling my kids while being a stay-at-home parent left me feeling bored.

As a pilot, I would wake up in New York City and fall asleep in Los Angeles. I would reflect on my day with a sense of accomplishment and pride.

As a stay-at-home mom, every day seemed identical to the one before it, and the only thing I ever got to explore was the endless pile of dishes in the sink.

I was so fed up and longed for adventure that I could hardly wait for the twins to start school so I could start pursuing my own goals and aspirations again.

Their kindergarten entry date was just a few short months away when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill in 2020.

.

As the pandemic's second year dragged on, I found myself struggling at home and yearning to explore the world again. Suddenly, a thought struck me: I could still take my kids on adventures while continuing to teach them.

Now, I try to teach my kids through travel to foster a lifelong passion for learning.

My primary objective as a homeschooling parent is to foster a lifelong passion for learning, and why not achieve that through travel? I began to plan trips for us with educational experiences and interactive activities in mind.

In Virginia, we went for a walk on the beach and learned all about the tides. We collected shells and horseshoe crabs and looked into the background of both.

Next, we visited the NASA visitor center on nearby Wallops Island and witnessed a shuttle launch heading to the International Space Station.

Once I discovered how simple it was to learn through travel, we expanded our scope to explore additional destinations.

After researching George Washington, we went on to investigate stalactites and stalagmites from a boat in a cave, and then had a kayak ride propelled by a friendly manatee while learning about its natural environment.

We've taken some of our more unique trips, but we also travel around the local area.

We spend time exploring the nearby woods to discover fungi and waterfalls, visit science centers in nearby towns, and check out local historical sites.

This hobby brings excitement to my life and makes me feel like each day has a purpose. I'm also enjoying discovering the world with my kids and learning new things together.
