There's nothing more visually pleasing than a well-organized fridge, especially the drink section. Carefully arranged bottles are lined up neatly. Seltzer waters are placed on their sides in plastic containers. And soda cans are stacked upright, all to save space and keep things sane. Organizing bottles and cans in an orderly way makes for a more enjoyable experience when grabbing a drink.

Why do soda cans have a beveled edge?

You'll notice two design features of soda cans. One is the indented, concave bottom, which enables the can to withstand a significant amount of pressure. Although the aluminum is thin, its design allows it to handle up to 90 pounds of pressure per square inch, which is roughly six times the regular atmospheric pressure. This design helps prevent the can from bursting due to the pressure inside from the carbonation.

A soda can's beveled-edge design is quite distinctive and visually appealing. Not only does the can rest neatly on a table due to its beveled foot, but it also facilitates easy stacking in small spaces, such as a refrigerator.

TikTok's use for soda cans

In addition to providing a concave bottom for handling pressure from carbonation and an edge for stacking, that bevel has another purpose. As TikTok creator @Jordan_The_Stallion8 points out, it can also be used to help open another can.

Here's how it works: Using the can on top, slide the beveled bottom under the pull tab of the can below, then pop it open. Voila! You now have an open can of soda without having to use your nail to pry the tab or hurt your fingers by pulling it down. What a clever idea!

Was the soda can always beveled?

Large beverage companies such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi ultimately switched to aluminum cans in 1967, leaving behind their classic bottles with their troublesome lids. As the can continued to advance, engineers sought ways to make drinking from a can more convenient, including designing a sloping bottom that makes it simple to open the next can.
