The Democrats have won the Iowa Senate District 35 seat, which was previously won by former President Donald Trump by 21 points. The special election took place after Republican Chris Cournoyer resigned as Iowa's lieutenant governor. Democrat Mike Zimmer capitalized on strong voter interest and lower Republican voter turnout.

Mike Zimmer, a former educator and school board president, won the election with 51.72% of the vote, while Katie Whittington, a Republican, received 48.08%.

Zimmer campaigned on education reform, expanding access to preschool and higher education opportunities, and tackling the high cost of childcare. He highlighted his background in education.

Zimmer said, "I am truly humbled that the residents of Senate District 35 have entrusted me to represent their interests in the Iowa Senate. Our campaign's commitment to hard work and fairness clearly resonated with a broad coalition of voters in Clinton, Jackson, and Scott counties."

Zimmer stated, "I'm excited to work on behalf of the people of Eastern Iowa to help working Iowans get ahead, support our public schools and teachers, and reduce the cost of living."

Senate District 35 encompasses Clinton County and parts of Scott and Jackson Counties, covering cities such as Clinton, DeWitt, and Maquoketa. Historically, this seat has been considered a stronghold for the Republican Party.

Whittington, a Republican Party organizer and former Clinton County chair for Trump's 2024 campaign, concentrated on parental rights in education and opposing the government's power to take private property.

The district's voter registration leans Republican, with almost 14,000 registered Republicans compared to 10,000 Democrats. According to reports, Democrats were able to capitalize on voter enthusiasm to secure their win.

Senate Democratic Leader Janet Weiner said, "Mike ran on a platform to help working Iowans get ahead, support public schools and teachers, and help lower the cost of living. This win shows that when Democrats fight for Iowa families, we can win anywhere. This is a victory for Iowans."

The Iowa Senate previously consisted of 34 Republicans and 15 Democrats. If the election results are officially confirmed, it will result in a gain of Democratic seats to 16, indicating a shift in momentum.
