David Hogg Becomes Democratic National Committee's First Gen Z Vice Chair
David Hogg, a survivor of one of the deadliest school shootings who has become a prominent progressive activist, is the first member of Gen Z to be elected as the chair of the Democratic National Committee.
The Democratic National Committee elected Hogg as vice chair over the weekend, describing the 24-year-old as "one of the most compelling voices" of his age group.
.
The same year Hogg graduated from Harvard in 2023, he co-founded and became the president of Leaders We Deserve, an organization that recruits and trains progressive candidates who are members of Generation Z and are running for state and federal offices.
He wanted to be a voice within the party that advises fellow Democrats on uncomfortable truths.
We're problematically surrounding ourselves with people who only say what we want to hear, rather than what we need to hear, as a habit," Hogg said to . "I understand that it's awkward to be told something we don't want to hear, but we need to cultivate a culture within the party that values saying what's required.
Hogg has criticized certain major decisions made by the Democratic Party, including former Vice President Kamala Harris' decision to decline an invitation to appear on popular right-leaning podcast host Joe Rogan's show.
Hogg called the decision a part of a "broader problem" during an interview with .
“He said, 'I don't think Joe Rogan appearing on her would've decided the election.' However, he believes it highlights the party's broader issue of often choosing to live with a comfortable illusion about the country's actual state rather than confronting the harsh reality."
