The Malaya, the much-loved South Asian restaurant on the Sydney Harbour, will shut down on King Street Wharf after 23 years.

Operators Isabella, Duan and Givie Wong have announced they'll be finishing up their last service on March 29, before reopening in Harry Seidler's Grosvenor Place on George Street in April.

They reckon the move "brings it all back full circle" as the restaurant was first established on George Street in 1963 by Wong Tai See, a bloke who migrated from Hong Kong to Australia back in the 1940s.

"It's like coming home for us," they said in a social media post.

The Malaya spent years serving generations of students, journalists, police and professionals in the CBD before Lance Wong's son followed the city's development to King Street Wharf in 1996.

At the moment, the restaurant is managed by the third generation of Wong's family members, namely Isabella and Duan, who are his grandchildren.

"While we'll miss King St Wharf, our home for more than 20 years, we'd like to take a moment to thank you, our visitors, for making it such an amazing part of our story," the operators said.

We're looking forward to serving you a few more memorable meals before you head off.
