Heritage number plates are just as good an investment opportunity as they're a piece of history. With a limited number of them out on the road, they've become a top-notch investment as their value will keep going up over time. They're also a status symbol, and the idea goes that the lower the number, the wealthier you are.
Typically spotted on high-end sports cars and luxury 4WDs, low-numbered heritage number plates can be worth five or six times the value of the vehicle they're attached to. However, there are some exceptions. 'NSW 7' is a family keepsake valued at over $10 million and is currently paired with a 2008 Subaru Forester worth around $5,000. Meanwhile, 'NSW 2' is attached to a Ferrari 458 Italia valued at approximately $400,000.
Because of the importance of the original metal plate, most people who own a heritage plate will opt to use a replica plastic display plate on their vehicle instead.
Celebrities, socialites, and businesspeople have been cashing in on heritage plates in recent years. Notable heritage plate owners include Aussie Home Loans founder John Symond who stuck 'NSW 111' on his Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Roxy Jacenko and her husband Oliver Curtis who put 'NSW 1908' on their new McLaren Artura, and businessman Andrew Banks who chose 'NSW 88' for his Porsche Taycan Turbo. It's no surprise that any license plate with '8', '88', '888' etc. is highly valuable due to its association with the lucky number.
Currently, the motorcycle plate 'NSW 2' is registered to a 1969 Harley Davidson FLH.
It'll be joined by 'NSW 37', 'NSW 399', 'NSW 392', and other low triple-digit heritage plates at the Collecting Cars auction as linked below.
