Subaru hasn't revealed a price for the new vehicle in Australia yet, but they've confirmed it'll be available here by mid-2025 in both hybrid and non-hybrid versions. Toyota has stopped making the non-hybrid RAV4, so it'll be worth watching to see how Subaru keeps the price of the hybrid model low to stay competitive. The Toyota RAV4 starts from AUD$42,260 plus on-road costs, while the current Subaru Forester begins from AUD$38,690 plus on-road costs.

Under the bonnet of the new Forester "Strong Hybrid" model is a 2.5-litre Subaru Boxer engine that teams up with electric motors and Subaru's signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system to deliver 145kW of power and 270Nm of torque. That's down on power compared to the RAV4's 163kW, but more than enough to make the heavier hybrid feel agile on its feet thanks to the electric propulsion. Notably, the city fuel economy has jumped by 30 per cent over the naturally aspirated petrol. Let's take a closer look!

Unlike the RAV4, the Forester doesn't have an electric motor driving the back wheels, and because of its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, Subaru reckons it keeps a low centre of gravity and handles well while also getting a better range. On top of that, the hybrid Forester also gets a torque vectoring system, vehicle dynamics control and an off-road X-Mode system from the regular petrol model, and it's got a sturdy 220mm of ground clearance.

That said, there's an even more off-road-capable Wilderness model which comes with the standard petrol engine, but with a notable increase in ground clearance to 236mm, plus different suspension, all-terrain tyres, and a more rugged set of bumpers. We're not sure yet if Subaru will bring this car to Australia, but we'd be keen to see it here!

Other changes to the new Forester include a tablet-like 11.6-inch multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, along with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display on 'selected' variants. It also has the Eyesight Driver Assist Technology feature with active cruise control.

“Driven by six generations of adventure this next-generation Forester features a bold rugged design, with the confidence of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and renowned X-Mode,” said General Manager of Subaru Australia, Scott Lawrence. “It’s built to take you from city streets to untamed trails with ease. Its revolutionary design brings advanced safety and immersive in-car technology and enhanced all-terrain capability. We're keen to share more details on the all-new Forester range in both petrol and hybrid over the coming months.”

The Subaru Forester hybrid will go on sale in the US first, with four models - Premium, Sport, Limited and Touring - expected to start from around USD$35,000. We anticipate that the price will be more competitive in the Australian market, given the large number of Japanese vehicles we import here, although exact specifications and further details will be revealed closer to the launch.
