1,000-year-old secret cache discovered in Alaska
A 1,000-year-old grub cache has been found in Alaska, a spot that once allowed Indigenous mob to stash their tucker for later.
In June last year, a group of archaeologists working at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in the States stumbled upon an undercover stash used by the Dene mob to store grub for later on. The find was made just north of Anchorage.
Elizabeth Ortiz, an archaeologist and cultural resource manager, said these stores were used to hold fish, meat and bush foods.
"The holes were dug into the well-drained soil and lined with birch bark and grass layers to keep what was stored safe," she said.
Research team member Margan Grover highlighted the strategic lifestyle of the Dene people:
They set up a way of life that let them be in the right spot at the right time for hunting, catching fish, gathering, checking the weather, and having social gatherings. They looked after a big chunk of country that had all the resources they needed to make it through the year. They took care of the resources in their patch, doing tiny things to help out what nature was already providing.
