Who Makes Mini Cooper Cars And Where Are They Built?

Table of Contents

One of the most iconic cars in the history of film is none other than the Mini Cooper, which made appearances not just in action-packed films like 1969's "The Italian Job" and its 2003 remake, as well as "The Bourne Identity." Mini Coopers also made cameo appearances in hit comedies like "Austin Powers in Goldmember" and who can forget "Mr. Bean."

Given the distinctly British culture that defines most of these films, except for "Bourne" and the remake of "The Italian Job," it's fitting that a British-made car plays a crucial part in the action, especially one that's perfect for navigating smaller European roads. Nevertheless, the Mini Cooper brand has become less quintessentially English than it was when it first debuted on the roads in 1959. Its origins date back to the British Motor Corporation, which initially produced the car in England.

However, the Mini brand underwent a notable ownership change in the year 2000, when BMW purchased the company. The renowned German carmaker has been producing Minis since then for almost two decades, but where do the cars actually get made?

Are Mini Coopers manufactured in Germany?

In the UK, the Mini Cooper has been made since the British Motor Company began production. Those Mini models produced as far back as the late 1950s and early models rolled off the assembly line at a facility in Cowley, England, near Oxford. It's not hard to see why Oxford became the official headquarters for Mini once it became an independent company in 1969.

Mini continues to manufacture many of its vehicles at the facility in Oxford, which remains in operation to this day, producing models such as its three-door and five-door versions, as well as the convertible and Clubman. To put it another way, the Oxford facility is currently producing around 1,000 vehicles daily, utilizing steel panels made in nearby Swindon, England. In 2016, BMW also used the VDL Nedcar plant in Born, Netherlands for its Mini production. However, that plant ceased operations earlier this year, and the last vehicle to be produced there was the Mini Cabrio.

Cooper production in Germany is expected to significantly increase in the years ahead.
