By the 1920s, cars were becoming popular. The first truck was created in the mid-1890s by Gottlieb Daimler, but at the time, it wasn't considered the ultimate goal of this technology. Automotive enthusiasts still wanted to innovate, and the people at Benz & Cie. focused on improving the engine. Although gasoline was effective, diesel was even better because it burned more slowly and used less fuel. So, figuring out a way to use a diesel engine in a truck would be a significant achievement - one that Benz & Cie. accomplished.

The 1923 Benz & Cie. diesel truck used a four-cylinder OB 2 engine that enabled it to produce 45 horsepower at 1,000 rpm. This engine consumed fuel much more efficiently than its gasoline-powered counterparts and was also claimed to be able to run on various fuels, including gasoline and paraffin oil. In the same year, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft was on the brink of success with its diesel engine truck that used a four-cylinder engine and produced 40 horsepower at 1,000 rpm. This impressive engine premiered at a public exhibition in Berlin in October, where it powered a truck, bus, and a tipper truck.

Benz & Cie. and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) were pioneers in the development of diesel trucks, ultimately leading the way for the first diesel-powered passenger vehicle to be introduced on the streets in the 1930s.

Within just a few years of introducing their diesel trucks, Benz & Cie. and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft were in for a major change. In 1926, the two companies merged to form Daimler-Benz, which is now known as Mercedes-Benz. Following this transformation, the desire to explore diesel-powered vehicles did not disappear. Instead, the company soon discovered the potential of diesel engines in passenger vehicles as well. In 1936, Mercedes-Benz unveiled what is considered the world's first diesel engine passenger car, the 260 D.

Over its history, Mercedes-Benz has consistently produced more powerful diesel engines.
