"We have a lot more work to do. We heard the inaugural address today," Biden said in his remarks at Joint Base Andrews before boarding a plane with former First Lady Jill Biden.
"We've got a lot more work ahead of us," Biden continued, before making the sign of the cross to laughter.
The former president advised his staff members to remain involved, in either a public or private role, in academia, or by running for office themselves.
We're vacating our office, but we're not stepping down from the battle," Biden said. "You're intelligent, you're accomplished, you're driven and the nation requires your presence again.

He expressed a hope that his staff will look back on the past four years with "the same feeling of pride that I have for all you've accomplished."
He said you set a great example, upholding values of honesty, decency, and integrity, and that you truly represent the best qualities that Americans hold dear.
Biden also expressed feeling hopeful that his term wouldn't be overturned.
As with the laws we've passed, our seeds will flourish and yield results for years to come, he said.

I've been doing this for 50 years, you're the best group of people," Biden said, receiving applause. "It's been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president.
He referenced Seamus Heaney's poem, "The Cure at Troy," noting, "Once in a lifetime, the longed-for tidal wave of justice will rise up and hope and history will rhyme."
He's said with emphasis, 'You've brought back rhyming to a level we haven't seen in a long time,' and went on to declare, 'We're on the verge of actual progress, so let's help make hope and history sound good together.'
