What age is too young to retire in Australia?
From tomorrow on, they'll be on it like a rat on a meat pie. Let's be real, most of us only get out of bed for the dough, if you'll excuse the expression!
The average age at which most Australians officially retire and enter their golden years. She found that the average age for the 130,000 people who retired in 2022 was 64.8 years (61). That broke down to 66.9 years for blokes and 63.2 years for sheilas.
Interestingly, the main reason Australians chose to retire was reportedly "access to financial support". That came out ahead of "sickness, injury or disability" and "not being able to get a job".
So we understand that many Australians who decide to retire do so because they can financially afford to.
For most Australians, the reality of a modest retirement becomes a possibility by the age of 67.
But what about those Aussies who, through good fortune, hard yakka or a combination of the two, find themselves able to retire a lot earlier than most? Is there a ticket out of the workforce that's too young?
Retirement: When is it too soon to retire?
Fair dinkum, this is going to be a pretty personal question. Many of us absolutely love having a crack at work, keeping ourselves occupied and feeling like we're making a decent contribution to the community. Maybe some of these people reckon they'll keep working until they can't no more, not because they have to, but because they bloody love it.
There ain't no worries about that.
But what about those who would retire tomorrow if they could? Well, I reckon there's a fair dinkum quote often attributed to the late Queen Elizabeth II:
Fair dinkum, gettin' a job's like payin' the rent on the only room you'll be livin' in – this fair earth of ours.
Fair dinkum, I reckon chasin' a worthwhile way to help others is key to bein' genuinely stoked and fulfilled in life.
What that contribution is can be whatever you make it for yourself. It could be working for a company (perhaps your own) or in a government, to make a positive impact on the world.
It could be spending time with young ones or seniors, caring for a mate or volunteering for a good cause. It could be creating something beautiful with art or music, or otherwise writing a book or poem.
Life is too short to spend time on a job that we don't enjoy, and doesn't bring a sense of purpose. So if you're in a position to retire, I reckon it's worth taking a break to bring happiness to yourself and the people around you. If everyone thought like that, I reckon you'd be hard-pressed to find an age at which you'd think you're too young to 'retire' in Australia.
