Vikings confirm major Kevin O'Connell move following wild-card loss

The Vikings have moved quickly after their season ended to finalize a contract extension for Kevin O'Connell. Minnesota's head coach now has a new deal, the team announced on Tuesday.

Mark Wilf says. "He has helped create an environment that will help us be successful in the long run, and he will continue to be the example we need as we strive to win a championship for the Vikings fans."

Those efforts had the potential to lead to a deal being reached quickly, and that has indeed occurred. The details of the agreement's duration are not clear, but the new contract has been described as a multi-year agreement.

The 39-year-old coach was hired in 2022 with prior experience as an offensive coordinator, but this was his first time as head coach. Making an immediate impression, he guided the team to a 13-4 record in his first season. However, last year's expectations, especially on offense, fell short due to a significant setback: quarterback Kirk Cousins suffered an Achilles injury halfway through the season, ultimately leading the team to a 7-10 record and missing the playoffs.

Minnesota's free agency decision on Cousins was a key storyline going into the 2024 offseason, and the Vikings ended up losing him to the open market when he signed with the Falcons. With J.J. McCarthy chosen as the long-term replacement at quarterback, Sam Darnold took over as the starter for 2024, particularly after McCarthy's meniscus tear put him out of commission for the entire season.

Whether Darnold will stay with the Minnesota team or sign a big deal with another team in free agency, his second season with the former top-three pick or a fresh start with a new head coach will bring high expectations following a 14-3 season.

Negotiations for an agreement involving Adofo-Menah are currently in progress.

Ensuring the top leaders in the organization stay in their roles for the foreseeable future makes sense for the Vikings. O'Connell's situation has been taken care of, and Adofo-Mensah is expected to be extended as well. Given that they have a 34-17 record with him as part of the duo, Minnesota's goal for 2025 and beyond will be to continue succeeding in the highly competitive NFC North.
