Trump pledges to restore McKinley's name to tallest peak in North America
President Trump stated on Monday that he will reverse the name change of Alaska's 20,310-foot Denali, the highest peak in North America, back to Mt. McKinley, reigniting a long-standing disagreement.
"We will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, back to Mt. McKinley, where it rightfully belongs," Trump said on Monday after being sworn into office at the U.S. Capitol.

In 1896, a prospector named the peak Mt. McKinley as a way to honor William McKinley after his presidential nomination, and the name has stuck. Despite this, controversy over the name has been ongoing for many years.

The Sierra Club, a conservation organization, stated that renaming the peak is in opposition to the desires of Alaska Natives, Alaska's elected officials, and a long-standing tradition that has been in place for centuries.
The Koyukon people have known this mountain as ‘Denali’ for centuries, and even state leaders in Alaska oppose this effort to change its name," said Athan Manuel, the director of Sierra Club's Lands Protection Program. "It's clear that Donald Trump is more focused on sparking a cultural controversy than on addressing the concerns of the public.

A team working on a bill to establish a park to safeguard wildlife could not agree on a name. One hunter-naturalist involved advocated for the park to be called "Mt. Denali National Park" in 1916, referencing a name given to the mountain by native people.
In 1917, the federal government officially named the massive peak in the Alaska Range "Mt. McKinley" after the president who served from 1897 until his death in 1901. As a result, the park next to it was designated Mt. McKinley National Park.
The debate began again in 1975 when the state of Alaska officially requested that the mountain be called Denali. Although the change was held back for many years, the park was renamed Denali National Park and Preserve by 1980.
