President Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement on his first day in office, a move that mirrored one he made earlier in his first term, which was later undone by then-President Biden.

The White House confirmed the withdrawal in a memo sent to Republican House members, saying, "President Trump will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord."

The process of formally leaving the agreement won't happen right away. In his first term, Trump announced the US would be pulling out in 2017, with the pullout becoming official two years later.

The agreement, signed in 2015 under the Obama administration, includes almost 200 countries that aim to cooperate on keeping the global surface temperature below a 1.5-degree Celsius increase above pre-industrial levels.

After the withdrawal process is finalized, the U.S. and Iran will be the only significant greenhouse gas emitters that are part of the global climate change agreement, but are not adhering to it.

Gina McCarthy, who previously served as head of the Environmental Protection Agency under the Obama administration and climate counselor for the Biden administration, criticized the decision in a statement to The Hill and stated that the burden of responsibility would now be on states and local governments to make up for the move.

This administration's decision to leave the Paris Agreement has left the American people and our national security vulnerable to harm. Nevertheless, I assure you that our states, cities, businesses, and other local institutions are prepared to step up and take action, even in the face of federal inaction. On a daily basis, state and local efforts will focus on generating good-paying jobs, lowering energy costs, reducing pollution, and safeguarding public health.

The announcement is one of several key actions made by Trump early on, undoing climate policies put in place by Biden, with additional rollbacks anticipated in the coming days and weeks.
