The 3 Reasons English Cucumbers Come Wrapped In Plastic
Experts have found a solution to address single-use plastics.
Adding it to your meals (depending on who you ask) can bring a burst of fresh flavor that really can’t be duplicated by any other ingredient.
I can pick from a few different types of cucumbers at my local grocery store. When I'm looking to snack, I usually go for the small, sweet Persian cucumbers that come in groups of five or six, wrapped in plastic and sitting on a cardboard tray. If I'm going to be pickling, I prefer Kirby cucumbers - they're the bumpy, thick-skinned variety, but I think their flavor is too strong, so I use them for pickling and not for snacking.
My go-to snack are those small seedless cucumbers. They've got thin skin and are super easy to prepare. What wouldn't give me pause is that they're always wrapped individually in plastic. Single-use plastic isn't really my thing.
3. The thinner skin of English cucumbers also makes them more susceptible to contamination and the growth of mold and bacteria.
I've been wondering why some cucumbers are sold without packaging, while my favorite variety is stuck in a plastic wrapper. After doing some research, I found out there are good reasons for this, and even more encouraging, companies are working on more environmentally friendly packaging options. Keep reading to learn why English cucumbers often come in a package.
1. Plastic Wrap Keeps Moisture Inside
In the US, English cucumbers have thin skins. Due to this, they are prone to losing moisture as they sit in the grocery store, turning them from firm and crunchy to hard and flexible. The plastic wrap provides an extra layer of moisture inside the cucumber, allowing it to stay fresher for a longer period of time.
When cucumbers are stored loose in a resealable bag versus those wrapped tightly with plastic wrap, the cucumbers wrapped in plastic wrap lasted twice as long – a full ten days compared to five days.
The cucumbers in the sealed plastic bag had enough space to breathe and release moisture, which created a humid environment perfect for growth of microorganisms that cause spoilage. This wasn't a concern for the cucumbers that were tightly wrapped.

3. Plastic Wrap Prevents the Entry of Oxygen That Causes Decay

Allowing for the clinical unit to operate beyond its normal limits in this manner can very modestly increase how quickly seed decay transitions from a rapid to a slow process of neurological degeneration.
