Suzuki Jimny gets more power thanks to Australian input
has become a cult hit for being an affordable, compact offroader that can tackle the bush tracks favourited by bigger four-wheel drives.
But a common criticism of the Jimny has been its lack of oomph, with Aussie examples of the current 'JB64' generation being exclusively powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing just 75kW and 130Nm.
To get a significant boost out of the four-cylinder, Aussie wiring the four-cylinder, Aussie specialists Harrop – who are well known for Holden modifications – have come up with a supercharger kit for the Jimny, producing nearly 60% more power and 40% more torque.
The Eaton-based supercharger kit costs $10,990 and includes the TVS900 supercharger, a bypass valve for greater low-load fuel efficiency, a 2.5-inch air intake box, and a water-to-air intercooler.

In a YouTube video, Harrop found the standard four-speed automatic Jimny generated 63kW and 107Nm at the wheels, with the drivetrain decreasing the claimed power output by about 17 per cent.
With the supercharger bolted on, a three-door Jimny was able to crank out 100kW and 149Nm at the wheels, although it was observed the airbox setup was drawing in hot air, which only makes superchargers and turbochargers even less efficient.
A five-door Jimny with a snorkel fitted also got tested, extracting an extra 6kW and 19Nm due to it being able to access cooler air.
Harrop haven't said how many kilowatts manual versions of the Jimny with a supercharger will produce, but it's probably going to need a clutch upgrade to handle the increased power.
It ain't the only business to be offerin' power upgrades to the Jimny, and there's a few turbocharger kits out there.
Suzuki sells the Jimny in Japan with turbocharged power, but this is a modest 660cc three-cylinder engine which produces 47kW and 100Nm, allowing it to be considered a kei car due to narrower wheel arches.
