Scientists sound alarm over rapidly growing threat impacting land around the world: 'Policymakers should strengthen their focus'

In a brand new study, researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research have discovered that abuse of the land is getting worse at an incredibly fast pace globally, which is posing a significant threat to efforts to combat climate change and protect the environment.

What's happening?

Land is expanding by approximately 1 million square kilometers (about 390,000 square miles) each year. The team of researchers discovered that roughly 15 million square kilometers (almost 5.8 million square miles) of land is degenerating globally, an area larger than the continent of Antarctica.

In an effort to promote international cooperation on sustainable land management, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification is taken in action.

According to the study, the Earth's environmental problems, including climate change, pollution, soil erosion, and water shortages, are all linked together and a result of either exceeding or nearing critical limits for the health of the planet.

The team maintains that insufficient actions are being taken to safeguard land from misuse and to guarantee the well-being of both individuals and the planet.

What are some of the reasons why land degradation is a matter of concern?

.

Researchers pointed out that destructive farming methods, including overusing chemicals and diverting water, have led to soil degradation and ecological imbalance. In some instances, these practices can result in desertification, putting local communities at risk of food shortages, water shortages, and conflict. Climate-related disasters like droughts and severe flooding are becoming more common due to global warming, adding extra pressure on developing countries to adjust.

Those who are most vulnerable, especially women, children, and people in developing nations, are hit particularly hard by land degradation. If practices of taking care of land aren't given the attention they deserve, these individuals may struggle with poor health and limited access to education.

Scientists observed that several areas are particularly susceptible to the effects of land misuse: the Mediterranean, South Asia, northern China, and California and the High Plains in the United States. Almost 2.7 billion people worldwide already reside in arid regions where water scarcity is a major issue, and additional land degradation would make it even more challenging for them to survive.

What is being done to address this issue?

The authors emphasized the importance of considering the bigger perspective when lawmakers create laws regulating land usage.
