The solar cells contain thin layers of other materials to enhance the suncatching process. The research team studied how those components of the cells experience a loss of voltage and current.
As a consequence, several crucial discoveries were made.

The more disordered the current is at a microscopic level, the poorer the performance of the solar cell becomes—and notably, this disorder also leads to a significantly faster decline in the solar cell's efficiency over time."
