Nintendo's new Switch 2 console will come out in 2025

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gaming giant Nintendo unveiled its newest console Thursday in a highly anticipated announcement that gamers had been waiting for since rumors of its release first circulated years ago.

According to the company, the Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the Nintendo Switch console, is slated to be released in the year 2025.

Nintendo reveals a larger version of the Switch, resembling its predecessor. The accompanying video displays how its controllers, known as Joy-Cons, are now attached to the side of the main console instead of sliding in.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will play Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Some Nintendo Switch games may not be compatible with or fully supported on the Nintendo Switch 2, the company stated.

The announcement didn't give out many specifics about the new console or its release date, but notes that more information will be made available at the company's April Nintendo Direct event. Not only that, the Japanese game creator also plans to host "Nintendo Switch 2 Experience" events in various locations around the world, allowing players to get hands-on experience with the new system.

Events are scheduled to take place in cities like Los Angeles, New York, London, and Paris in April. Ticket registration for these events will start this Friday, according to Nintendo.
