Netflix will start raising its subscription prices for US users, marking the move as the streaming service begins to expand its offerings with more live content.

The streaming service reported that it gained almost 19 million subscribers during the quarter of the holiday season, which suggests that the new approach has been successful.

In the same year, Netflix's foray into live programming is mainly driven by its attempt to sell more ads, but it's also likely to convince current subscribers to stay with the service while drawing in new viewers.

"As we commit to enhancing our service and providing more benefits to our users, we'll periodically request that our members pay a bit more so that we can reinvest this money to further improve Netflix," the company stated.

1. **Basic Plan:** This plan costs $9.99 per month and allows for standard definition viewing on up to one screen at a time.

Netflix announced in an email to CBS MoneyWatch that it will be increasing its monthly subscription plans for American customers by a range of $1 to $2.50.

  • A standard plan with ads will increase to $7.99 a month from its current price of $6.99.
  • The regular price will rise to $17.99 per month, compared to the present $15.49
  • The premium plan's price will increase to $24.99 per month, up from its current rate of $22.99 per month.
  • The price to add an additional member is now rising to $8.99, previously it was $7.99.

Maintaining the advertising-based plan option would cost an additional member the same $6.99 monthly rate, the company stated.
