NBA Commish Adam Silver says he supports the idea of switching to 'four, 10-minute quarters'
Evaluations and brainstorming efforts to enhance the league are in full swing.
.
The NBA plays 12-minute quarters. If the NBA were to adopt the Silver proposal, those periods would be shortened by two minutes. Ten-minute quarters would result in eight minutes being subtracted from the game clock.

Silver pointed out that the decrease could produce a more "consistent" presentation for basketball fans who watch games on TV.

I'm not sure that many others think about the implications when it comes to records and things like that. I believe a two-hour format for a game fits better with modern TV viewing habits. People in the arenas aren't asking us to shorten the game, but essentially, as a TV show, Olympic basketball is a two-hour program and college basketball is 40 minutes.
At one point, Silver referred to the length of games played in other leagues around the world.
'The NBA is the only institution that plays 48-minute games in basketball. ... It's such a significant change to the game. … Something like that would need to be discussed more in the future."

Professional basketball games, commonly known as "ballgames", last 48 minutes, made up of 24-minute halves.
"We are looking to establish a more uniform set of rules for this game worldwide, especially since it has a global audience," Silver said.
Silver pointed out that saving two minutes per quarter by reducing playing time could reduce the wear and tear on players over a typical 82-game season, and may also help the league address its "load management" issue.
"Actually, if a 40-minute game is considered, equivalent to one with load management and resting, it would be around the same as missing about 15 games throughout a typical season," Silver said.
Silver emphasized that the ideas he mentioned in the discussion with Patrick are still conceptual and have not been implemented.
"It's nowhere near that level," he said.
Adding a pitch clock helps "speed up the game," according to him, and still keeps the classic aspects of the game intact.
"I'm a baseball fan, and I believe some of those changes have actually boosted the excitement ... the entertainment value of the game, and I'm really focused on that," Silver said.
In fact, I've used the pitch clock in meetings at the NBA to explain that we shouldn't be hesitant to consider changes.
