MLK Jr.’s daughter: ‘Wonderful’ inauguration on MLK Day

Bernice King, the daughter of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., says this year's coincidence of MLK Day and Inauguration Day presents a chance to reflect on her father's legacy.

‘It's wonderful that this takes place on the King holiday, the inauguration, because it reminds us of King,' King, the youngest of Martin Luther King's four children, said on MSNBC's 'The Weekend' on Saturday.

Coretta Scott King was just 5 years old when her father, Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

Despite President Donald Trump's history of making racially tense remarks, King said that the fact his inauguration is happening on the same day as her father's holiday "points us back to King."

“She mentioned that moving forward has to be done in line with the legacy of King," she said.

King and her brother, Martin Luther King Jr.'s son, Martin Luther King III, have been vocal opponents of Trump since his initial presidential campaign.

Last year, former President Trump endorsed North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson for governor. Robinson was a candidate at the time and had reportedly made negative comments about Martin Luther King Jr. In remarks, Trump likened Robinson's accomplishments to King's, saying he was like King “on steroids.”

Trump compared himself to the civil rights icon as well.

President Trump made a false statement where he said that the crowd he had at his January 6th, 2021 "Stop the Steal" rally was bigger than the crowd for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Martin Luther King gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

For those who feel "defeated" by the election outcome, Bernice King said that Americans need to "stay focused on the goal" of nonviolence.

We absolutely need to think things through. We've been lacking a clear plan. We're also losing sight of Dr. King's vision. Dr. King's vision is centered around non-violence. Non-violence isn't just about a certain attitude; it's a mental approach. For us, we see it as a way of thinking, talking, acting and interacting that's guided by love. This mindset has the power to bring about transformative change on a personal, cultural, and societal level.
