In her first public comments following Trump's inauguration, President Claudia Sheinbaum pointed out that some of his initial moves bear a striking similarity to actions he took during his previous term. She also emphasized that the Mexican government will vigorously defend the country's interests.

"Regarding the orders signed by President Donald Trump yesterday, I would like to say the following: The people of Mexico can be assured that we will always defend our sovereignty and our independence," said Sheinbaum, standing alongside two senior ministers.

"It's really important to keep a calm and level head," she added.

In response to Trump's initial efforts to stop illegal immigration, Sheinbaum stated that her government will take a "humane" approach, while also vowing to deport foreign migrants back to their home countries.

President Trump is expected to sign more executive orders on his second day in office. This follows actions taken on Monday, where he declared Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations, and indicated that broad tariffs on Mexican and Canadian exports to the US may take effect starting in February.

At her daily morning news conference, Sheinbaum stated that while Trump signed an executive order declaring border crossings by undocumented immigrants from Mexico as a national emergency, she will continue to demand respect for her country's citizens.

She also emphasized that her government would seek cooperation on security and other issues with its northern neighbor, and reaffirmed its commitment to revising trade agreements in 2026.

The peso temporarily halted its decline while Sheinbaum was speaking, but it reverted to its earlier losses later on, ultimately posting the worst performance in a set of global benchmark currencies.
