First quarter

The Commanders received the ball first after winning the coin toss. The Lions' offense was starting on good field position after the opening kickoff failed out of bounds. However, the Lions didn't capitalize on this advantage. Following two runs by David Montgomery for combined losses of 13 yards, Jared Goff was unable to complete a pass to Tim Patrick, resulting in a three-and-out situation for the Lions' offense.

The Lions suffered a quick blow when cornerback Amik Robertson was injured after a teammate's accidental hit, forcing him to be escorted to the locker room with his arm supported. Meanwhile, the Commanders moved the ball down the field on the opening drive with four consecutive pass plays. The drive eventually stalled, leaving the Commanders facing a third-and-14, and they were stopped from converting on fourth-and-1. They attempted a trick play, with quarterback Marcus Mariota taking the snap directly, but were unable to convert the turnover.

The Lions immediately went back to work, building on the momentum provided by Gibbs, who successfully made a couple of sharp cuts on his way to a 33-yard run.

On a third-and-one, Goff was sacked and fumbled the ball, with Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu recovering the fumble.

The Washington offense started moving downfield, carrying momentum into the second quarter with the clock turning over.

Second quarter

Daniels started the quarter with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Dyami Brown, reaching the Detroit 16-yard line.

Detroit tried to immediately respond with a deep pass to Williams, but Goff overthrew him by a yard or two. Goff then tried St. Brown, who caught it for a 34-yard gain.

Then a wide receiver screen to Kalif Raymond brought Detroit all the way down to the 2-yard line, and Sam LaPorta scored a touchdown with a one-handed catch.

But it only took three drives for the Commanders to counterattack. A wide receiver screen to Terry McLaurin went 59 yards for the score.

A bad snap on LaPorta got the Lions off to a rough beginning. Two plays later, Goff overthrew a pass to Tim Patrick, and it was intercepted by Quan Martin, who returned it for a touchdown.

On the interception return, Goff took a big hit and was forced to leave the game to be checked for a head injury. Teddy Bridgewater took his place for the next series. The Lions pulled off a smooth reverse to Jameson Williams, resulting in a 61-yard touchdown to make it
