Ireland's 'forgotten' city is as unique a place as you'll find in the country, and well worth a visit
.
Unique to Ulster and only found in the northeast area of Ireland.
Once you arrive, it's clear you're in Limerick. A place that some locals think has been "left behind" by the rest of the country, and you can sense that some people and business owners have a bit of an attitude. But many have actually used that feeling to their advantage.

We stayed in the Limerick Strand hotel, which really couldn't have a better location. It was a truly stunning hotel, with our beautiful room having a fantastic view of the River Shannon. The hotel met every expectation, with the breakfast being a real highlight.
The swimming pool and gym were perfect, and the staff at the bar/restaurant were extremely competent.Overall, the staff at the hotel greatly enhanced our stay. Their positive attitudes were contagious, and it contributed to a great experience. They got the fundamentals right, and any concerns we had were promptly and professionally addressed by the hotel staff.
The weekend in Limerick turned out to be all about excellent service. Our first meal was at The Buttery, a restaurant we chose because they had a wide range of gluten-free options that would cater to my partner's dietary needs due to his coeliac disease. As soon as we walked in, we were glad we had made that choice.
We didn't know that the restaurant was celebrating its 10th anniversary, but as soon as we walked in, they surprised us with a complimentary drink. I had the pleasure of eating what is now my greatest fried chicken experience in Ireland. If you're a fan of fried chicken, The Buttery is an absolute must-visit.

Limerick has a rich display of creativity among its residents. The area is indeed plagued by stark poverty, but according to Treaty City Brewery owner Stephen Cunneen, it's the diverse types of people that give Limerick its unique character.
Cunneen showed us around his one-of-a-kind brewery, which is developing quite a following across the country, but also took the time to give us a history lesson about Limerick in general. It's remarkable to see such artistic and creative hotspots existing alongside some of the most troubled areas of the country, a reality that Limerick embodies.
The county offers a diverse experience, unapologetically so. That trip with Cunneen was a standout part of the trip. He is an energetic personality who could eloquently represent Ireland, and might be the best ambassador globally. I can't think of a better representative, and if you visit Limerick, it's worth making it a point to meet him at his brewery.
Anyone who is too proud or too nervous to visit Ireland's one-of-a-kind city, is definitely missing out.
