How a single punch swung the AFC Divisional Round game between Bills and Ravens
.
With that one punch, everything shifted.
The Bills held a 21-10 lead when the teams went into the locker room for halftime. The Ravens' mistakes were a big reason for that, but in the second half, Baltimore's defense and offense stepped up. Running back Rob Gronkowski scored on a five-yard touchdown run, but Buffalo answered with its next possession to increase its lead to 24-19. The Ravens were still very much in the game.
On their next drive, the Ravens encountered a second-and-11 situation, but quarterback Lamar Jackson took his time in the pocket before locating tight end Mark Andrews wide open in the middle of the field. Andrews caught the pass at the 43-yard line but began scanning for further options.
Game landed.
As Andrews attempted to cut left to right to make a play, Buffalo defender Terrel Bernard landed a well-timed "Peanut Punch" on the football, dislodging it from Andrews' right arm.
This photo illustrates just how much space Andrews had before he fumbled the ball.
For good measure, Bernard took advantage of the loose football, quickly regaining possession for Buffalo and swinging the game's momentum in a significant way. Buffalo then drove deep into Baltimore territory on their next drive, burning nearly five minutes off the clock, and concluded that drive with a short field goal by Tyler Bass, increasing their lead to 27-19.
Taking all that momentum right back for Baltimore, and putting the Bills on the threshold of the AFC title game.
