Hobart Hurricanes into Big Bash grand final, Jack Edwards takes one-handed catch

Sydney Sixers player Jack Edwards has taken one of the sweetest catches this summer, but sadly it wasn't enough for his side as the Hobart Hurricanes got the nod to host the Big Bash League grand final.

One of the standout moments was Edwards's one-handed grab to send Matthew Wade back for the Hurricanes during their qualifying final at Bellerive Oval, helping them snatch a 12-run win.

The Hobart Hurricanes are one win away from their maiden Big Bash League flag after a scorching Riley Meredith spell helped them edge out the Sydney Sixers by 12 runs, sending them into the final.

Chasing 7-173, the Sixers needed 21 off the last six deliveries but Chris Jordan gave up only eight as the visitors finished 5-161 on Tuesday night.

Jordan Silk gave the Sixers a glimmer of hope with 57 from 44 deliveries after joining the crease when his team was in big trouble at 3-5 in the third over.

Inistaffa showed class with a strong opening spell, reaching speeds over 152 clicks an hour and leaving the Sixers in disarray.

He got rid of Josh Philippe for a duck with his fourth delivery before Ben McDermott cleaned up skipper Moises Henriques (1) with a gem at slip.

Silk paired up with Kurtis Patterson (48 off 33) and then newcomer Lachlan Shaw (33 off 25 not out) to give their team a chance.

Cook fell to a smart catch from Jordan off Nathan Ellis in the second last over.

Perilous hitter Ben Dwarshuis shellacked a six from his second ball to give the Sixers some hope as the final over looms.

"It's a ripper of a feeling, but there's still work to be done," Jordan said.

Riley's been a standout all season. He's been really impressive with his speed. When we watch him, it starts to get us pumped up.

Tasmania's team have made the final twice thus far – in 2013/14 and 2017/18 – but they are one of the two teams who don't have a trophy.

Sydney will miss the experience of Steve Smith, Todd Murphy and Sean Abbott, who've departed Australian shores for a two-Test cricket tour of Sri Lanka.

"We were asking the batting line-up to put in a lot of effort after 3-5, but the boys showed a lot of spirit to give us a fair dinkum crack," Henriques said.

Earlier in the countdown Owen (36 from 15) got the Hurricanes away to a cracking start before Tim David (25 from 10) got in on the action late.

The Hurricanes were shaping up to have a huge total after a 0-43 start off their first three overs, but found the going tough through the middle order.

Edwards created his highlight of the day in the field by a great catch to dismiss Wade off Mitchell Perry's bowling.

Owen, who's had a ripper of a time moving up the batting order this cricket season, came out hammerin' with four boundaries off his first eight balls after Hobart went down in the toss.

But when he got out caught off English wrist spinner Jafer Chohan (2-28) in the fifth over, Hobart stalled.

Caleb Jewell (40 out of 41) and McDermott (42 out of 31) struggled to get going before the latter snapped out of it in the power surge.

The Sixers are going to get another tick at making it into the grand final. They'll be up against either the Sydney Thunder or the Melbourne Stars.
