Harris joins a decades-old tradition for vice presidents in her final days in office
on Thursday at the White House, a nearly 100-year-old tradition took place.
In Harris' formal office at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, she gathered with a bustling crowd of current and former staff members to express her gratitude for their "extraordinary commitment" to serving the public good and putting the hopes and dreams of the American people first.
We've each chosen a path in life and a purpose centered around serving others and making a positive impact, driven by a mix of determination and a refusal to accept limitations.
Following the photo shoot, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff snapped a few pictures as Harris used a Sharpie to sign her desk drawer. This tradition has been practiced since the 1940s and has continued uninterrupted, dating back to the Ford administration. The vice president mentioned that she has met each of her predecessors who previously signed their names on the desk, with the exceptions being President Eisenhower and President Truman.
As spectators chanted, "MVP! MVP!" Harris, who ran unsuccessfully against President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, was asked about her plans for the next step. There have been ongoing speculations as to whether she will run for governor of California.
“I'll let you know as soon as there's an update,” she said with a smile.
