Greenland’s leader calls for independence: ‘We’re neither Danish nor American’

Egede expressed strong support for partnerships with both the EU and the US, emphasizing the potential for increased investment in Greenland's mining industry from both European and American sources. He reaffirmed that the people of Greenland should determine their own future through a referendum process.
He stated that Greenland would aim to continue being a member of NATO while strengthening its security and defense relationships with both the U.S. and the EU.
'Newsom said that if Greenland were to take these measures, it would remain a vital part of the Western alliance and a trusted partner for the U.S., because the security of the U.S. would be inextricably linked to the security of Greenland.'
The Trump administration's plans to annex Greenland
On December 23, 2024, Donald Trump expressed an aspiration for Greenland to become under American control.
As of December 29, The Washington Post reported that Trump had recently discussed taking control of Greenland, regaining control of the Panama Canal, and possibly making Canada the 51st state. These ideas were reportedly related to his efforts to counter Russia and China.
France cautions Trump against provoking European Union border disturbances
On January 7, 2025, Donald Trump Jr. traveled to Greenland. When questioned about his visit, he stated that he was there as a tourist with no intention of meeting with political leaders.
On the same day, President-elect Trump informed the press that he wouldn't rule out using military force to gain control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.
In response, Egede emphasized that Greenland has no interest in getting involved in the ongoing political disputes between the U.S. and Denmark.
Danish officials express concern over Trump's comments about Greenland
“Greenland is something that belongs to the people of Greenland. Its future and our efforts to achieve independence are matters for us to decide,” he said on January 7.
On January 8th, CNN reported that Trump's associates and advisors cautioned Danish officials to take heed of his comments regarding Greenland.
By January 14, Fox News reported that Trump's allies in the House of Representatives had drafted a bill to buy Greenland.
According to journalists, the proposed bill would allow Trump to start negotiating for Greenland's purchase right after he takes office.
