Greenland’s leader calls for independence: ‘We’re neither Danish nor American’

On January 7, 2025, Donald Trump Jr. traveled to Greenland. When questioned about his visit, he stated that he was there as a tourist with no intention of meeting with political leaders.

On the same day, President-elect Trump informed the press that he wouldn't rule out using military force to gain control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.

In response, Egede emphasized that Greenland has no interest in getting involved in the ongoing political disputes between the U.S. and Denmark.

Danish officials express concern over Trump's comments about Greenland

“Greenland is something that belongs to the people of Greenland. Its future and our efforts to achieve independence are matters for us to decide,” he said on January 7.

On January 8th, CNN reported that Trump's associates and advisors cautioned Danish officials to take heed of his comments regarding Greenland.

By January 14, Fox News reported that Trump's allies in the House of Representatives had drafted a bill to buy Greenland.

According to journalists, the proposed bill would allow Trump to start negotiating for Greenland's purchase right after he takes office.
