David and Victoria Beckham use mixed materials to perfect an emerging design movement that favors warmth and texture in the kitchen

For years, consistency in materials has been a defining feature of our kitchens, but this year, designers are promoting a more adventurous approach – and we're getting inspiration from London's trendiest couple.

Introducing a mix of materials to add warmth and texture, while also taking advantage of their practical benefits, is a trend we're carrying over into 2025. However, David and Victoria Beckham were already ahead of the curve in 2022. In their London townhouse, they hired luxury Italian manufacturer Officine Gullo to create a space that showcases mixed materials, setting a stylish example.

For years now, as the Beckham design reminds us. It showcases the brand's signature cooking appliances (all with a metal exterior and stainless steel countertops) alongside dark gray wood cabinets, a wooden center island, and copper pans hanging in the center. Although two years old, it remains our go-to design for combining materials this year.

To achieve a cohesive look with mixed materials, Bakes suggests identifying areas that can "communicate" with each other, and then incorporating one different material into each section. This will allow your kitchen to feel curated and cohesive while also introducing texture and a trendy aesthetic.

"There need to be connection points between metallic elements, with perhaps a single focal point like a range hood or metal doors. Some ways to link metallic elements are to match the sink fixtures and hardware, then choose a different finish for the lighting and accessories," he says.

They picked one of their signature metals: copper. The couple placed copper pans above their kitchen island, creating an instant warm and welcoming atmosphere. The best part is that this material is accessible in every kitchen style.

"Copper instantly warms up a space. Hammered copper creates a nice contrast when paired with smooth, cool materials like marble. Additionally, copper is a versatile material that can smoothly transition between different design styles," comments Naomi Neilson, the founder and CEO of Native Trails.

'Copper works well in combination with other warm-toned materials like polished nickel, light gold, and different shades of bronze,' Neilson says.

'I really like the combination of a matte black finish with hammered copper, but another great option would be to pair a copper bathtub with a Native Trails Gunmetal sink in Precious Metals. This metal finish has a unique shine and glow that, when paired with the copper, would be truly striking.'
