Chuck Todd, who moderated NBC's Sunday morning news program "Meet the Press" from 2014 to 2023, informed his colleagues on Friday that he would be departing the network.

Todd has served as NBC's chief political analyst, reporting to Kristen Welker.

There's never a perfect time to leave a place that's been my professional home for so long, but I'm pretty excited about a few new projects that are on the verge of going from hypothetical to a reality that's getting near," Todd wrote in the memo. "So I'm thankful for the opportunity to get a head start on my next chapter during this crucial moment.

Todd said he will keep his podcast "The Chuck Toddcast" and will relocate it to a "new broadcasting location shorty."

We appreciate Chuck's significant contributions to our political reporting over the past 20 years at NBC News, and for his dedication to Meet the Press and its enduring history," NBC News said in a statement. "We wish him all the best in his future pursuits.

Todd came on board at NBC News in 2007 as the political director. Since then, he has been an important figure among NBC's political journalists and has been innovative in adapting to various new media platforms.

In addition to his Sunday morning responsibilities, Todd started hosting a daily MSNBC show in 2015 under the "Meet the Press" banner, and he added a daily streaming show on the NBC News Now platform in 2020. The network also launched a "Meet the Press" film festival.

In his memo, Todd made a critique of the mainstream media environment that NBC operates in, stating that "the media has a lot to do in order to regain the trust of viewers, listeners, and readers."

The only way to fix this information environment is to stop complaining about how social media companies are manipulating things and instead take action to build a strong foundation locally," he wrote. "National media can't earn back people's trust without having a solid partner in local reporting and trying to manipulate algorithms is not an effective way to inform and report. People are looking for community and local media can build that connection much better than national media or the big social media companies.

After the departures of prominent CNN personalities Chris Wallace and Gloria Borger, news came out of the network on Tuesday.

Todd also shared some advice with his colleagues at NBC News.

We can't let fake news spread, but it also means we can't just stick our heads in the sand and ignore what's really going on; if we do, we'll miss the most important stories.

In keeping with that thinking, Todd disagreed with suggestions that Republicans who supported attempts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election should not be invited on Sunday morning programs like "Meet the Press."

A real journalist isn't about building a personal image, it's about covering what's happening and digging into the reasons behind it, so the public can decide for themselves, without trying to sway their opinion. If you're in this to gain popularity or to be a mouthpiece for a particular cause, then you're doing it wrong.
