Archaeologists in Egypt Uncover a Well-Preserved Mummy Wearing Gold and Blue Sky God Mask

Egyptian archaeologists have discovered a remarkably well-preserved mummy that is adorned with a gold mask featuring the god of the sky.

The mummy's head was wrapped with a mask made of cartonnage, where papyrus strips were glued together to become a solid material. The mummy was exceptionally preserved due to its linen wrappings keeping it intact. The mask featured an image resembling a person and the ancient Egyptian sky god, Kheb.

Although mummification was closely linked with ancient Egypt, the custom continued well into the Greco-Roman period. The region's ancient sites feature a mix of Islamic and Coptic landmarks, in addition to structures from the Greco-Roman era.

Repairs as an urgent priority had to be made to the outer casing of the sarcophagus, in order to make sure it would withstand transportation to Fayoum, the capital city of this region, where further restoration work would take place.

The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities has made an effort in recent years to promote archaeological work in the country and attract tourists. This effort came about due to the 2011 revolution and the following period of instability that led to a significant decline in tourist numbers. Archaeologists also believe that the area may contain a variety of sarcophagi and burial sites similar to what has been found already.
